S2:E3 Coming of Age in a Rock ‘n’ Roll World

On the third episode of this five-part interview series, Laurie Kaye describes how she escaped from her dysfunctional family and the fortuitous events that unfolded soon after. We talk about how she got an apartment even though she was under aged, an offer from a stranger to dance with him in a contest for a Dick Clark special that covered the early rock and roll years, wins the contest, gets her photo taken with Clark and Chubby Checker, goes off to college to UC Santa Cruz, falls in love there with her first boyfriend who would go on to break her heart a la Lou Reed style, injured her ankle and is advised to heal in Bali, moves to the island, realizes that journalism is her passion, comes back to the states, lands her first professional job at KFRC in San Francisco, and her career in journalism begins. Oh, and almost a decade later, Laurie would end up working with Dick Clark, and he not only remembered her from the dance contest, he kept a copy of the photograph! Laurie’s coming of age in a rock ‘n’ roll world would ultimately lead to interviewing so many great musicians and artists, most especially George Harrison, Paul and Linda McCartney, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
