Episode 10: It’s Funky Patti Time! A Detroit Girl Becomes a Jungle Rock Star

In Part II, we finish listening to the last two songs on Side Two that Patti contributed to the “Rock and Roll Survivors” album. We play “Jungle Rock Star” and “Beggar Man” back to back, because Patti saw these songs as musical bookends to her commentary on the social issues of the early 1970s. We not only go into depth about the craftsmanship of the songs, lyrical content, stunning harmonies and vocals, but Patti also talks about the hardcore reality of sex, drugs, and rock & roll in Detroit and L.A. and the devastating toll it took on too many lives.

  1. I loved the song ‘Beggar Man.’ It was the flip side on the Butter Boy 45 because I still have that record. I didn’t manage to get the ‘Rock and Roll Survivors’ CD until years later on Amazon. It was interesting to hear that it was really about drugs because I thought it was about a man lurking in the dark shadows.

    1. Hi Dee! Thanks for listening! I love learning that “Beggar Man” was the flip side of “Butter Boy.” And, yes, I too found it interesting to learn that song was about drugs. Hope you’ll stay tuned for tomorrow’s episode – we play the live Fanny rock opera from 1974 (never before heard!), and we discuss/play “Beggar Man” live. It’s Part I of II.
