S2:E11 Sneaking Up On Magic

On the final episode of Season Two, we begin with Rosemary Clooney’s rendition of “I’ll Be Seeing You” to set the stage for our reflection of the iconic Quatro family. We discuss Mickey’s impact on Detroit Rock City, including the music festivals he booked and promoted. Patti sees his entrepreneurship as a natural evolution of being a Quatro raised and steeped in music. This included him watching dad, Arthur, book gigs around town, playing “da di da” music in dad’s trio with sister Suzi, performing on Lawrence Welk at the age of fifteen, and coming home to Detroit just as the burgeoning rock scene was emerging. Patti shares that Mickey learned from her dad and started his own booking business and promoting music festivals. The diversity of musicians her brother put on the bills was representative of the neighborhoods in Detroit – all of which were creating sounds that reflected their geographical social status and cultural uniqueness. Mickey also recognized his sisters’ talents in the Pleasure Seekers, and made sure that they were always included in the festivals. We end the episode with Patti revealing what it was like to grow up a Quatro in a city that was brimming with musical talent and possibilities. Patti’s answer may surprise those outside the Motor City, but it will not surprise Detroiters.
