Patti reveals on Season 2’s Episode 3 how the first gig the Pleasure Seekers played in 1964 was a “ballsy” (her word) dare from the teen girl band. Patti and Suzi were coat check girls at the Hideout, a place where “sweaty, horny teenagers” (to quote Patti) could dance to live music away from the watchful eyes of their parents. Patti approached the club owner, David (Dave) Leone, and dared him to put them on, and he did! They were booked thereafter not only at the Hideout, but other Detroit hot spots. The Pleasure Seekers eventually went on to record for Hideout Records with MC5, including their groundbreaking song, “What a Way to Die.” Patti goes into depth about how the song got recorded, who sang and screamed the vocal parts, all of which resulted in the first all-girl garage band singing about drinking, smoking, and dying before 21 years old! The song remains a part of the musical canon that started the sound of Detroit rock city. We conclude with Patti and I introducing a mysterious mate of the Pleasure Seekers who are not very well known unless you were lucky enough to be there in person when Patti entered the clubs.
