S2E8: The Musical Musings of Yoko Ono
Join me as I welcome back biographer Madeline Bocaro for a trilogy of in-depth interviews to discuss Yoko Ono’s art, music, and worldview. These interviews came about as a result of a devoted fan, Cindy Lee, demanding (her word) that we continue our previous conversations about Madeline’s phenomenal book, “In Your Mind – The Infinite Universe of Yoko Ono.” On the second part of the trilogy, Madeline discusses Yoko’s music and how it cannot be disassociated from her conceptual art. Each piece of music included specific instructions for the musicians she played and recorded with, including Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr, and Eric Clapton. “The intimacy, honesty and wisdom that Yoko openly shares in all her work – especially in her music, is quite generous and always remarkable,” Madeline writes in her chapter called “Queen of the Scream.” If you haven’t given Yoko Ono’s music a chance – and even if you’re steadfast not to, this episode will at least shed light on her reasoning and approach to it, and why so many talented musicians ranging from classical jazz to rock ‘n’ roll wanted to work with her.
