S2:E9 Mischievous Mickey Catches a Little Moonbeam
On Ep. 9 we begin by listening to the Lennon Sisters’ “Catch a Little Moonbeam,” and finish our conversation about Patti’s brother, Mickey, and his stint on the Lawrence Welk Show from 1958-1960. Patti shares some great stories about Mickey’s teenage antics while living in L.A., including a car demolition and dating one of the Lennon Sisters! We also discuss the logistics of being a child performer in Hollywood, his adoring female fans, and what it was like upon his return back to Detroit. Once home, Mickey immersed himself in the family biz of booking gigs for bands and artists. He soon recognized that homegrown rock music was starting to emerge in the Motor City, and bands like MC5 were laying the cultural framework for a musical renaissance ready to catapult a generation into a stratosphere of new sounds and experiences. We close out by listening to Mickey’s rendition of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” from the Welk show, which he played it for his mom, Helen, because it was one of her favorite songs. Ep. 9 rounds out our three-episode conversations about Michael Quatro’s early life in music and how it led to him becoming one of the pioneers of Detroit Rock City.
