Season Three: Episode Forty: On the Elevator Express

On S3/E40, Dr. Kristen Hillaire and Patti Quatro continue talking about the return of the Pleasure Seekers to Detroit in late October 1968 after a year-long stint on the road. We also continue to discuss the Pleasure Seekers’ acute awareness of the seismic shifts in rock ‘n’ roll music. The band took on these musical changes and challenges, and wrote their first two original songs, including “Elevator Express.” Patti recounts, “We weren’t in the mood to write a la-la-la love long by any means. No. Not the Pleasure Seekers. The words indicate that as you’ll see. It’s more about a hunger to stake a claim in one’s life and make something of yourself.” It was a pioneering approach to writing original music from a pioneering all-female rock band. We conclude the episode with Patti giving us a musical lesson in what she hopes we’ll listen for in “Elevator Express.” Are you listening…?
