Yoko Ono’s “Cut” and John Lennon’s Response to “Yes”
On Episode 3, Madeline Bocaro talks about Yoko Ono’s avant-garde art including two of her works, “Cut” and “Yes.” In 1966, on the eve of one of her shows in London, John Lennon wandered in and discovered her simple yet profound conceptual art. Yoko was initially unsure if she wanted to meet this Beatle, but he quickly came to see and admire her talents. It was then that the spark of their spiritual and soulful connection began even if it took eighteen more months before they got together. Bocaro also discusses how Yoko’s philosophy and reverence for nature is woven into every aspect of her art, music, and life; yet another reason why Lennon was so drawn to her. In 2016, Yoko wrote on Twitter, “Birds communicate with each other. It’s not singing. It’s their language. It’s so beautiful and different from ours.” It was this new and infinite universe in Yoko’s mind that showed John that he had finally found the partner he’d been searching for his whole life. Her “Yes” had become his sign that everything was going to be alright.
