S2:E2: It’s a Family Affair
The second episode of this five-part interview series with Laurie Kaye traces the story of her tumultuous childhood at the hands of an abusive and dysfunctional family. It’s a heartbreaking depiction of an only child growing up in L.A. with a mean and disinterested mother and an “evil step-father” (Laurie’s words). As a result, music became a lifeline from a very early age, and Laurie soon would start using her babysitting money to buy concert tickets and albums. In addition, the L.A. music scene was the place to be, and DJs and artists were providing Laurie a vision of what a family could look like versus the one she had grown up with. Laurie says, “I fell in love with so many artists, all I wanted to do was talk to these people,” and soon her wish would come true. Not only would she be talking to these people, she would be interviewing them, hanging out with them, and calling them friends as she embarked on her extraordinary life in music journalism.
