Season 4 Episode 5:
Dream
It’s here and it’s hot! Season 4 of the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Survivors Podcast” focuses on the all-female band Cradle straight out of Detroit from 1969-1973. We’re calling E5 “Dream.” It’s a song written by Cradle that describes the individual human journey and to keep forging ahead to find your own dreams, survive your own nightmares, and daring to experience it fully and in technicolor instead of watching it pass by in black and white. This episode takes us to Grosse Pointe, Michigan, where we discuss the speech given by Martin Luther King, Jr. in March 1968 at Grosse Pointe High School. One attendee was fifteen-year-old Nancy Quatro, and she describes what it was like to see him in person, and how his reception in Grosse Pointe and his enlightening speech changed her entire outlook on life. We listen to “Dream” from the perspective of what was happening socially, politically, and culturally in America during this time – including perpetual racial tensions, the ongoing Vietnam War, and the spread of political protests, uprisings, and revolutions. Cradle’s song masterfully weaves together the entirety of these societal elements into a magnificent and dream-like musical construction that bears painful and powerful witness to it all. Are you listening…?
